Dr. Susan Wright On The Dangers of Halloween Candy!Comment RSS

October 6, 2009

This is a guest post by Dr Susan Wright, a veterinarian who writes for Dog Fence DIY. Dog Fence DIY can supply everything you need for your own underground dog fence, and show you how to install it.

Trick or treat? One of the most enjoyable parts of Halloween for children is dressing up in costumes, going out knocking on doors, and receiving candy and other delicious treats. It’s an American tradition, and each year over 90% of the nation’s children participate in this fun activity.

For many of these children, their dog is a part of their family and they enjoy sharing their loot with him. This is not always a good idea.

If your child’s goodie bag contains chocolate, it’s really important that they don’t share it with your dog. Chocolate is toxic for dogs, and can cause illness within a few hours of eating it.

The active ingredient in chocolate that is so dangerous to your dog is theobromine. It’s also found in caffeine, but because coffee tastes bitter and dog’s don’t seem to like it, caffeine poisoning isn’t common.

How much theobromine does your dog need to eat to be affected? The lethal dose is 100 – 150mg of theobromine per kilo bodyweight. So, the toxic amount varies with the type of chocolate eaten, and the weight of your dog.

Dark cooking chocolate contains 1400mg of theobromine per 100g. This means that half a 250g block can be fatal to a 10kg, or 22lb, dog. Milk chocolate is much less toxic, containing only 150mg theobromine per 100g.

If your dog manages to eat enough chocolate, he’ll vomit, have diarrhea and appear edgy and excited. He’ll possibly stagger on his feet, and develop muscle spasms. This can lead to seizures, coma and death. In some cases, dogs just drop dead after eating chocolate; it appears this is because the chocolate has affected the heart rhythm and caused it to fail.

If you think your dog has raided the chocolate stash, contact your vet immediately. Give her an idea of how long ago he ate the chocolate, how much he may have eaten, and whether or not he’s showing any symptoms. She may suggest that you bring him straight into her clinic for treatment.

Generally, treatment for chocolate poisoning is to make the dog vomit any chocolate that’s still in his stomach, and give him activated charcoal to stop any more theobromine being absorbed by his intestines. If he has any muscle twitches or other symptoms, he may need sedation until these stop.

If you want to give your dog something special at Halloween, stick to a nice meaty bone or a treat specifically for dogs. This is one occasion when you shouldn’t encourage your child to share his chocolate.

Dog

Don’t let your dog hibernate this fall and winter season and suffer from the case of the blues. With the cooler temps around the corner, don’t think all the fun is lost when you need to bring it inside. There are many ways to engage your dog indoors that will keep them healthy and happy until spring rolls around.

-Have a play date with the neighborhood pups. Have the pup bring their favorite toy to show off to their friends and to assure no fighting occurs over toys! You can bake your own dog treats or if they favor Sundog Circus Snacks, surprise your dog and their furry guests with a delicious treat.

-Take your dog along for the ride next time. Looking to drop mail off at the post office, need to pick up the dry cleaning or grab a gallon of milk at the corner store? Take your pooch along with you! They will love the change of scenery with a quick car ride.

-With care and much caution, if you have the space in you home, play hide and seek with your dog. Hide their favorite toys in new places and reward them with treats as they seek out the toy. Even play indoor fetch, by rolling your dog’s ball down the hall, or lightly toss it around in the garage or basement.

A happy dog, means a happy owner. Keep them active and lively during the chilly months and you’ll find yourself enjoying their company!

Who’s Your Favorite Famous Pooch?Comment RSS

August 7, 2009

Dogs, no matter where they are, make wonderful companions. They’re smart, funny, and have personalities that are worthy of applause – especially in the movies or on TV! If you’re a big fan of the silver or small screens, we want to hear about your favorite celebrity dog. Was it a pooch that just stole your heart or a pup that went on a great adventure? With so many stories, movies, and TV shows to choose from, it can be so hard to pick out which dog outshines the rest. Here are a few of our favorites:

Beethoven, the great Saint Bernard with a heart of gold, had us from the very first bark in his title film. This lumbering dog gave us so many laughs as he drank out of a fishbowl, left a special present in his master’s briefcase, and ate the turkey right from the table on Thanksgiving.

Want to inspire a bit of canine magic? Rent the Harry Potter series of movies to watch Fang, Hagrid’s pet dog, take part in the wizardly adventures. Though the film refers to Fang as a Boarhound, he’s actually played by several different Neapolitan Mastiffs.

Or if you love the classics, be sure to watch Dorothy and her dog, Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Played by Terry the Cairn Terrier, Toto was actually a she and received a great salary for working on the film! Her trainer received $125 per week for her role.

So let us know, what celebrity pooches make you laugh, cry, or bark with joy?

How much is too much doggy love? In our opinion there’s never a limit to the joy that your dog brings you so in return there’s no end to your love for them, and the people over at Welcome Dog Lovers seem to agree.

While you can’t measure your doggy love, you can attempt to measure their CIQ or Canine Intelligence Quotient through a test we found about in Dog Intelligence- A Bit on Canine IQ. The test was developed by a professor of psychology who came up with three types of dog intelligence. Check out the resourceful list of dog facts in their post, Dog Facts That You Should Know.

Bursting with love and care, we just can’t get enough of all the information and stories on Welcome Dog Lovers we can’t help but give “Two-Paws Up” for hitting both quantity and quality in all their posts, just bursting with information!
