Trust us- they’re two paws up!

Golden Retriever

Ingredients:
1/2 cup dry milk
1 egg
6 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 cup rye flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rice flour
1/2 cup cracked wheat
1 small jar beef baby food (no onion!)

For the Glaze - 1 egg, 2 tablespoons beef broth

Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 ° F.

In a large bowl, combine the dry milk, egg, oil, honey, baby food, and broth. Gradually blend in the flours and cracked wheat. Add enough wheat flour to form a stiff dough.

Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Shape the dough into a ball, and roll to 1/2-inch (12 mm) thick. Using bone-shaped cookie cutters, make biscuits!

Transfer to ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4 inch (6 mm) apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits.

Bake for 30 minutes. Whisk together the egg and broth for the glaze. Brush biscuits with the glaze on both sides.

Return to oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Let cool overnight then it’s time to treat!

Ask Rakker: Take Your Dog Trick-or-Treating!Comment RSS

October 30, 2008

Q: Dear Rakker, my name is Mimsy and my family goes trick-or-treating every Halloween, and leaves me at home. They dress the kids up in cute costumes, and I just have to sit on the sidelines and watch. It’s not fair, especially when I see some of my dog friends dressed up. All I want is to be a crocodile or a cute penguin!

Dog Costumes

A: Hi Mimsy! Aww, don’t be down – many families feel their pooch won’t like wearing a Halloween costume, so let me educate all those parents out there. Dressing your dog up in an ill-fitting costume for a whole day or more is definitely not recommended. However, dog Halloween costumes are meant for dogs! If you’re dressing your dog up just for a few hours, feel free to go all out with his or her Halloween costume! There’s tons of cute dog costumes out there! And remember to take Dog Treats with you when you take your dog trick-or-treating!

Mimsy, give your family some extra help, and the next time the computer’s on, put your paw on top of that computer mouse and navigate to photos of dogs in Halloween costumes!

Is Your Dog Ready to Party?Comment RSS

September 24, 2008

Celebrate your cat or dog’s birthday by throwing them a party! Sure, there won’t be pin the tail on the donkey or musical chairs, but there are plenty of great ways for both pet and pet owners to have fun.

Dog Treats

For example, you can look online for a variety of dog treat and doggie cake recipes. Most of these dishes use wheat flour, peanut butter, or bacon, so make sure that all of the ingredients are safe for your doggie and his or her guests. (Oh, and be sure to pick up a people cake too!) Don’t forget to stock up on party snacks and fare for your human guests as well.

Dog Treats

Invite over neighborhood pets or family pets that your dog or cat is familiar with. Allow for playtime for them while the people can socialize and enjoy the party too!

Decorate your home or backyard with animal-themed décor from your local party supply store. Choose something fun and festive!
Also, send out a gift list to guests asking for pet food, toys, blankets, flea and tick repellents, collars, leashes, or clothing. Find great Dog Gifts for your pooch at K9HealthSolutions.com.
