Every dog deserves a little something special, but when you want to treat your pup, be sure that you’re choosing only the best snacks and biscuits. After all, you want your dog to be both healthy and happy! So the next time you’re shopping at the store for tonight’s dinner, think of your pup and how you can be sure that he gets serving of veggies too by trying out this great recipe for Veggie Bite Dog Treats. They’re definitely good enough to earn you a big doggie kiss!

Ingredients:

3 cups fresh parsley, minced
¼ cup carrots, chopped fine and drained on a paper towel
¼ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 ¾ cups whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons bran
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup water

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees with the oven rack in the middle.
In a large mixing bowl, stir together parsley, carrots, cheese, and oil. In another bowl, mix together bran, flour, and baking powder. Add dry mixture to veggies and mix until well incorporated. Then gradually mix in water to make a moist, but not wet, dough. Add a little less water if needed.

Next, roll out your dough to abut ½ inch thickness. Then, using cookie cutters, cut out shapes and transfer them to a large greased baking sheet. As an extra fun touch, choose bone or dog shaped cookie cutters.

Once the shapes have been cut out and placed on a cookie sheet, bake for 25-30 minutes or until they have browned and hardened slightly. Remove from oven. The treats will become harder as they cool.
Serve to your pup and his playmates and store the rest in an airtight container.

Keep Your Dog Active and Happy This Season!Comment RSS

Dog

Don’t let your dog hibernate this fall and winter season and suffer from the case of the blues. With the cooler temps around the corner, don’t think all the fun is lost when you need to bring it inside. There are many ways to engage your dog indoors that will keep them healthy and happy until spring rolls around.

-Have a play date with the neighborhood pups. Have the pup bring their favorite toy to show off to their friends and to assure no fighting occurs over toys! You can bake your own dog treats or if they favor Sundog Circus Snacks, surprise your dog and their furry guests with a delicious treat.

-Take your dog along for the ride next time. Looking to drop mail off at the post office, need to pick up the dry cleaning or grab a gallon of milk at the corner store? Take your pooch along with you! They will love the change of scenery with a quick car ride.

-With care and much caution, if you have the space in you home, play hide and seek with your dog. Hide their favorite toys in new places and reward them with treats as they seek out the toy. Even play indoor fetch, by rolling your dog’s ball down the hall, or lightly toss it around in the garage or basement.

A happy dog, means a happy owner. Keep them active and lively during the chilly months and you’ll find yourself enjoying their company!

Protect Your Dog from the Canine FluComment RSS

With the spread of the human H1N1 flu virus, most people seem to be focusing on how they can prevent the flu from entering their homes. However, few have taken the time to consider the deadly risks of the latest flu strain to affect dogs: the H3N8 virus.

Canine influenza was first identified in U.S. dogs in 2004 after an outbreak of respiratory disease in racing Greyhounds in Florida. Since then, it has continued to spread and has been detected in dogs in 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Primarily affecting dogs in shelters, kennels, doggie day care centers, and other public areas, the dog flu manifests itself like many other common flu strains by causing symptoms like coughing, runny nose, and fever, however it cannot be spread to humans. In older or weaker dogs, the flu can prove deadly, however, there are options for treatment both before and after your dog gets sick.

If you suspect that your dog has contracted the flu, be sure to visit your veterinarian. In addition, if you’re worried about your dog becoming infected, you can also talk to your vet about getting your pet vaccinated.

In the meantime, as flu season runs its course, be cautious about utilizing doggie day cares, dog parks, and boarding facilities. These are some of the most common areas for dogs to spread the virus and it’s better to be safe than sorry until flu season passes. In addition, be sure that your dog’s immune system is getting a boost by supplementing his diet with nutrient products like Dinovite and by making sure that he’s get enough exercise, fluids, and regular grooming.
