Protect Your Pup From Summertime Hazards
May 18, 2009
Every pup deserves some summertime fun, but it’s important to remember that safety comes first. To keep your dog safe while he enjoys the summer sun, be sure to consider these safety tips offered by Dr. Mark Stickney, director of General Surgery Services at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. In his interview with a local newspaper, Dr. Stickney describes some great ways to keep your dog safe from heat stroke. “With heat stroke an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure,” Stickney said.

First off, he recommends that you should never leave your pet in your car, even with the window cracked. The dangers of heat and isolation in such a cramped environment can spell disaster for your dog, even if it’s just for a short time. Keep this in mind when traveling to the beach or to the park with your dog during the summer months. Try to keep car trips short and stop frequently to let your dog get some air and stretch his paws.
If you play with your dog outside, there are many things you can do to make sure your pet is cool and comfortable. The first step is to assess his surroundings. Are there adequate places for shade? A place to put water? Make sure your pet has both when spending more time out doors. Always remember to fill up his bowl with fresh cold water as frequently as possible.
Finally, regular grooming and maybe even a shorter haircut can be a great way to keep your dog cool.
“It is actually a good idea to cut your dogs hair, not only for comfort from the heat, but also because dogs with thick wooly hair are prone to skin infections. Shaving the fur down lets the skin breathe and reduces the occurrences of these infections,” explains Stickney.
By following these simple rules, you can keep your dog safe from heat stroke and ensure that he’s enjoying summertime just as much as you are!
this is a great article. also I use an automatic water filter which circulates the water keeping it cool. At times I will put some ice cubes in the back trough to further cool the water. The dogs LOVE it!
